In 2020, Sanjidul Islam was honored with the prestigious Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Ashoka Young Changemaker award in Bangladesh. This recognition celebrates his exceptional leadership and steadfast commitment to social impact, particularly through youth empowerment and climate advocacy.
Growing up in Bhola—a climate-vulnerable coastal region of Bangladesh—Sanjidul witnessed firsthand the environmental and social challenges faced by his community. Inspired by these realities, he took initiative at an early age to address climate issues and mobilize his peers. His leadership in youth-led organizations focused on raising climate awareness among adolescents in coastal areas reflects his dedication to driving meaningful, grassroots change.
The Ashoka Young Changemaker title not only acknowledges Sanjidul's impactful work but also connects him with a global network of young innovators dedicated to social transformation. It has further empowered him to collaborate, exchange ideas, and amplify his mission of building sustainable, resilient communities for the future.
Growing up in Bhola—one of the most climate-vulnerable regions of Bangladesh—Sanjidul Islam developed a deep and personal understanding of the urgent need for environmental awareness and sustainability. At the age of 15, he began actively engaging with youth-led platforms such as Little Citizens for Climate, an international organization promoting climate action among young people. His early and ongoing commitment to environmental advocacy has shaped a strong sense of responsibility toward environmental regulations, sustainable marine operations, and ocean stewardship. This perspective aligns closely with the maritime industry's growing emphasis on decarbonization and environmentally responsible shipping practices.
Through active involvement with youth groups, NGOs, and institutions at both national and international levels, Sanjidul Islam has cultivated strong teamwork and collaboration skills. From co-leading projects and organizing awareness events to executing field-level activities, he has consistently demonstrated the ability to work effectively within diverse teams, resolve conflicts, and achieve shared goals. These interpersonal competencies are vital in the maritime sector, where coordination, mutual support, and cohesive crew dynamics are essential for maintaining safety, operational efficiency, and a productive onboard environment.
Sanjidul Islam has taken on key leadership responsibilities in several youth-led organizations, including coordinating national networks and regional initiatives. In these roles, he has successfully led advocacy campaigns, mobilized diverse teams, and managed operations across multiple regions. These experiences have sharpened his ability to make sound decisions under pressure, communicate with clarity, and take initiative—core competencies essential for shipboard leadership. Born on January 1, 2004, in Bhola, a climate-vulnerable region of Bangladesh, Sanjidul Islam has completed Pre-Sea Cadet Training with STCW-78 certification. He is well-prepared to begin a professional career in the maritime industry.
